Funeral Parade of Roses
Funeral Parade of Roses is a delirious mix of avant-garde style and grind-house shocks. It takes us on a journey into the darkest corners of late-'60s Tokyo. Nothing appears to be taboo in Toshio Matsumoto's controversial directorial debut: neither the incorporation of visual flourishes from contemporary graphic design, painting, comic books, and animation, nor the unflinching depiction of nudity, sex, drug use, and public toilets. However, of all the "transgressions" on exhibit here, one sticks out in particular: the film's revolutionary and unashamed representation of Japanese gay society.
