Hearts of the West
Lewis Tater, a naive Iowa farm boy, aspires to be a well-known Western novelist like his hero, Zane Grey. He leaves home to respond to an ad for on-campus classes for a writing correspondence course, only to discover that the school is nothing more than a row of postboxes at a remote Nevada train depot. Lewis stumbles across "real" cowboys—cowboy actors filming a movie in the desert—while fleeing the con men responsible. Instead of writing, the aspiring screenwriter soon finds himself acting in Westerns for the run-down Tumbleweed Productions studio in Depression-era Hollywood.
