That Summer
The classic GREY GARDENS by Albert and David Maysles memorialized the home of Edith and Little Edie Beale, relatives of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy who lived in appalling conditions. However, there is more to the story: Lee Radziwill and Peter Beard introduced the Maysles to the Beales when they set out to make a film on Radziwill's youth. For 45 years, the reels of that initial contact were shelved. This documentary resurrects the footage that was lost. We are transported to "that summer" of 1972 through Beard's recollections and artistic vision, to a seductive dream world and collage of radically unconventional creative personalities—Warhol, Bacon, Jagger, and Capote—practicing the art of living amidst oppressive forces of class expectation and prejudice.
